As road trips go, sometimes you won't be able to stop and see every "World's largest ball of random crap." Some days are just spent, well, on the road. Yesterday was just one of those days. It was a lovely drive through Louisiana, once the sun came up. After our daily morning search and "can we get the trailer in the parking lot" Starbucks game, we settled in for what would be one of the longer days on our trip.
It decided to rain yesterday, making our trip a little bit longer. But have no fear, The Corlenoni family kept us entertained. Oh to be a mob boss. We hit lunch time in Houston and ate our weight in some yummy tex-mex where I found my new love for Tamales. Why have I not experienced this before?!
Just before lunch, and perfect timing too, cause we couldn't listen and search for food at the same time, our Story-telling time with New York's most dangerous came to an end. After wiping the salsa off our chins, we decided it was time for a new book-on-tape. We got a great view of the city line of Houston as we Google-mapped our way to a Barnes and Noble. We promptly purchased Pride and Prejudice, Unabridged, for...well, my listening pleasure. Hubs owed me for The Godfather.
We made our way to Austin and much to our surprise, we quite easily walked right into the capital building and took a stroll. It's nice not having every security guard look at you like you're about to blow something up.
Next stop, Cousin Shilpa's house. One of the greatest things about my family and our culture is the food...good God...the food! Shilpa and her mother-in-law treated us to some of South India's finest Idlies, Sambar and other nummies...makes me think of my daddy, every time. After the dinner, Shilpa and her
clan treated us to Amy's Ice Cream in the heart of Austin. I thought I loved Banana pudding before, but having it set to ice cream, I die.
We waded back to their apartment, cause torrential downpour doesn't even come close to describing the storm that landed on us last night. Sleep came quick, and so did 4 o'clock this morning. As Shilpa and Nithin waved us goodbye this morning, just before we pulled out of their complex, she buzzed my cell
to inform me that the door to our trailer was open. Now, knowing that there's a HUGE lock on the U-HAUL meant that the door was most definitely NOT supposed to be open. Sure enough, it was wide open, all contents wet from the rain, some bags hanging out that had been pilfered through and there
was an alarming lack of expensive U-Haul dollies missing. We drove back to where it was parked over night and saw that someone had managed to break/cut/decimate the lock as it was no where to be found. But whomever the culprit was, I guess they were just cold from the rain and had a deep desire for a clean
floor as all that was missing were our blankets, pillows, a sleeping bag and our $30 Walmart vacuum. They kindly left the dollies, a chair, a side table and a couple other small items on the grass next to where we parked.
I'm sitting in a Walmart parking lot now, guarding the trailer with my life while hubs is inside buying a new, hopefully fool-proof, lock.
The sunrise is beautiful.
