Husband and I have been married for almost 7 months now. Time flies when you're a newlywed! We made the decision to move in together a little over a year before we got married. Actually, we got the call that we got our first apartment together on the way to the airport for hub's surprise trip to California where he would go on to propose 25 minutes after wheels down in San Diego...in my 6 hour flight hair glory and all. Our choice to move in together was an emotional and financial genius on our part. And as an added bonus, I already knew that he is prone to throwing his dirty clothes on the floor well before he ever actually gets to his laundry hamper, before we got married.
With that said, I'd like to introduce you all to a great friend of mine. She's a great writer as well as a great friend (with some killer dance moves...just watch our wedding reception video)! A Modern Day June Cleaver Domesticated Disaster
A year ago, I was a single lady. A lady that enjoyed dancing at bars, considered a TV dinner a gourmet meal, and claimed a clean bedroom was only one layer of clothes on the floor as opposed to a mountain. To say I had a lot of growing up to do was quite the understatement.
A year later, I am a domesticated lady. A lady that enjoys walking the dog past bars on a Saturday night, considers attempts to tackle new from-scratch recipes a gourmet meal, and claims a clean bedroom is spotless and neat.
How did I go from one of Beyonce’s Single Ladies to a modern day June Cleaver (authors note: modern day June Cleaver = ambitious professional that also maintains skills to care for oneself and others on the homefront)? Here is my roadmap:
1. Cook a roast. Burn roast and collapse into a fit of tears realizing that the solid brick of meat makes for a better weapon than an acceptable meal.
2. Iron boyfriend’s shirts including t-shirts. Where is the iron? Water is involved? Who irons t-shirts!? #fail
3. Discipline dog. Okay the dog is trained in only German.
4. Learn German. Is that sound really a word?! How am I supposed to string these sounds together to make a sentence?? Solicit one word commands to control dog on walks.
5. Vacuum apartment. Stare blankly into closet at three items that may or may not be the vacuum. Ummm, ever heard of effective straight-forward labeling, vacuum/handvac/steamer companies?
The list goes on and on. With some bumps in the road, I have swapped my Saturday nights at a club for a night in with friends giggling over a game of Taboo and conversations with girlfriends have shifted from gossip and drama to recipe exchanges and tricks of the trade. A lot has changed. And I couldn’t be happier.
Tales of the not entirely domesticated will be forthcoming on this blog periodically. The life of the newly domesticated is filled with treasured mishaps that are too priceless not to share.
