William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio is NOT like Charles B Aycock High School in Pikeville, NC.
The obvious difference...one is fictional, the other is a small country high school in a small town.
I had a fairly normal/uneventful high school experience. No one hated me, that I know of. I got good grades. I had a good, solid group of friends. I was involved in A LOT of extra currricular activities (Show Choir, Yearbook, Newspaper, Art Club, Octagon Club, Theater). Did you catch that? I was in Show Choir.
While the "jocks" at CBA didn't throw technicolor slushies in our faces, the show choir wasn't exactly the most popular of clubs to be involved in. The entire music program was pretty much viewed as an excuse to have two 2-hour long assemblies a year where all you have to do is sit and listen to decently played/performed music that no one likes.
We did not do Gaga, Cee Lo, or even Broadway. We were at the mercy of Mr. Walker (had to call my sister to get his name) and his, dare I say, questionable music choice. We sang songs like Chatanooga Choo-Choo and Jump, Jive and Wail. Yeah, I'd be laughing at us too.
We didn't have life lessons via popular Top 40 music, but we were taught the ins and outs of singing. We learned to read music like our lives depended on it. And with the way Mr. Walker used to yell at us, it did seem like our lives depended on getting the right rhythm or hitting the propper note. We were a group of uber talented kids. Ok, maybe none of us are on Broadway right now, or have been at some point in our lives, but we could SANG!
Aside from the song choices, we had another HUGE difference...our "costumes." They were HORRIBLE! We did not wear cute aqua Jenny Woo dresses with Doc Marten boots or the darling black and gold Betsy Johnson number from Regionals past. Nope. We wore tuxedo pants and shirt with a fabulously horrible Columbia Blue Sequined vest with a Gold bow tie. Or, for Christmas, a vest with a Christmas pattern your grandma would be afraid to wear, and matching bow tie. And this awesome outfit was worn by both the boys and girls.
With songs like Chatanooga Choo-Choo and the Gold bow tie, how could people not laugh at us!
TV Show Choir. Cute, right?
Real Show Choir. Yikes.
*Hint: I'm on the right, sister on the left
Thank you Glee for bringing us Show Choir that's enjoyable to watch and listen to!
